Ethnic Studies Professor, Santa Clara University, Fall 2010 to Present.

Teaching (1) “ETHN 95: African American Independent Filmmakers” course, which was approved for the Diversity core and soon to be cross-listed with Cinema Studies in the Communications Department. Course is taught while serving a joint-appointment as University Advisor. Course parallels African American history, introducing students not only to themes of gender, race, class, and sexuality in film, but also aesthetic shifts in post-reconstruction cinema, the cinema of the Harlem Renaissance, the cinema of the 1960s (Blaxploitation era), the cinema of the 1980s (Spike Lee and Julie Dash era), new Black city cinema movement and beyond.

Taught (1) “ETHN 35G: Women, Race, Class, and Sexuality in Harlem Renaissance” course, which was approved for the Diversity core and cross-listed in two other departments: English and Women's and Gender Studies.

Taught (6) sections of “Contemporary Black Autobiography,” an upper division course which is rooted in the slave narratives. The course details how people of color use various writing modes and narrative strategies to tell their story of triumph over adversity.

Taught two (2) sections of “Multicultural Literature” for students from diverse area backgrounds in the Summer Upward Bound Program, which helps many first-generation college students prepare for and apply to college.

Creative Writing Teacher, Sarah’s Circle, Washington, DC, 2001

Taught senior citizens, ages 65-99, techniques for writing their own autobiographies. Drawing upon the individual’s memory, the course helped students write the narratives of their childhood. Students listened to books on tape to aid their writing and creativity.

Taught (4) "Fundamentals of Science" classes to K-3^rd grade students.

Playwrighting Teacher, The San Francisco Mime Troupe, San Francisco, CA, 1996

Taught the fundamentals of playwrighting to a diverse body of students (age 14-19) from The Columbia Park Boys & Girls Club, The Japan Community Youth Center, The Chinese Community Youth Center, and The Girls Against Gang Violence Program. Program allowed students to write plays from their own diverse perspectives, illuminating the intersections of gender, race, and class for students of color who come from various neighborhoods.

As a California State Champion in Dramatic Interpretation, I co-founded and taught a 2^nd, 3^rd, and 4^th grade Forensic Team.
Taught young orators the power of the spoken word, using poetry and excerpts from various speeches.
Directed and choreographed young orators for a successful, citywide M.L.K. celebration at James Logan High School (my high school alma mata where I participated in numerous Honors course for Gifted and Talented Students).

Diversity Core Curriculum Implementation

Developed, organized, and taught two new diversity courses for the new University Core Curriculum.
One course, “Women Race, Class, and Sexuality in Harlem Renaissance Fiction” (ENGL 35G/ETHN 35/WGST 15) was approved for Pathways and cross-listed in 3 different departments: English, Ethnic Studies, and Women’s and Gender Studies
A second course, “African American Independent Filmmakers” (ETHN 95) was approved for Pathways and is in discussion about being cross-listed with Cinema Studies in the near future.
I worked strategically throughout the development of both courses, successfully collaborating and encouraging departments to begin talking with each other about innovative ways to teach the diverse human experiences about people of color.

University Advisor, Santa Clara University, Drahmann Advising and Learning Center, Fall 2009 to Present

Managing and monitoring the academic development of all Undergraduate students matriculating at Santa Clara University
Meeting with students in all respective majors and fields to apprise them of Core Curriculum requirements, Major and Minor requirements
Advising students on academic probation and helping them to implement successful work ethic and study habits in order to meet graduation deadlines.

Assisted with the registration of over 3200 incoming Freshman and Transfer students during the month of July in the Harrington Library

Responsible for introducing incoming Freshman and Transfer Students to both our Old and New Core Curriculum as well as providing them with instructions on how to register for both core and major classes. Also provided instruction on registering for their first Critical Thinking and Writing, Current Issues, and/or first Religion course.

Conducted over four (4) workshops, featuring approximately 20 students each, along with Pancho Jimenez to incoming “Unity” students.
Managed over 63 one-on-one counseling sessions with incoming Freshman in the University Advising Center.

Lead Workshop Presenter, January 2010

Developed and produced a workshop for 20 plus LEAD students for Erin Kimura Walsh’s LEAD Seminar course to introduce students to the resources available in the Drahmann Center and to further explain requirements for freshman, major/minor information, as well as graduation checklists.

Host

Arranged a trip with students in my ETHN 35/ENGL 35G/WGST 15 course to see Angela Davis at San Jose State University. Students provided numerous extra credit responses to the trip. Also arranged trip for students to see “Ain’t Misbehavin’” at the San Jose Repertory Theater, as well as other conferences happening on Santa Clara’s Campus such as the Diversity Lectures and conference on budgetary concerns in the U.C. System.

The conference was sponsored by the Department of English and featured well known African American poets and writers, including but certainly not limited to: Nikki Giovanni, Eugene Redmond, Jerry Ward, Dolores Kendrick, Rita Dove, Lucille Clifton, Houston Baker, Sharan Strange, Haki Madhubuti, Amiri Baraka, Elizabeth Alexander, Jabari Asim, Naomi Long Madgett, Kevin Young, and Tony Medina.
Materials were subsequently published in The New York Amsterdam News, The African American Literature Book Club online, Seeing Black Information News Source Online, and several other Black newspapers around the country.

Request for a $5,000 grant was submitted for the implementation of a newly funded Diversity course called “Filmmaking for Social Justice”
The course would introduce students to the documentary process, detailing how to use film as a medium to serve, chronicle, or highlight diverse, marginalized communities
Students would use the University’s Media Center to edit short 5-10 minute documentaries on software such as iMovie and Final Cut Pro 7
